Özet

Cichorium intybus and Lentinus edodes are traditionally used in the management of liver disorders and the present study was undertaken to validate their folkloric uses for the same. The extracts of Cichorium intybus and Lentinus edodes were prepared, total 36 albino rats divided into 6 groups like control (NC: normal diet), carbon tetrachloride induced (TC: CCl4), Cichorium intybus extract (TCI), Lentinus edodes extract (TLE), Siliver (R) treated (TS) and all treatments together (TCLS). Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was given orally to all groups except NC. Different biological parameters were studied like total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) while comet assay was performed to assess the DNA damage caused by CCl4. There was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in TOS and a significant decreas in TAS and lipid profile was observed due to CCl4 supplementation. Cichorium intybus and Lentinus edodes extracts significantly (p < 0.05) restored the abnormal levels of blood parameters. Comet assay showed ameloriative effects of combination of plant extracts in carbon tetrachloride induced - DNA damage. Cichorium intybus and Lentinus edodes extracts have hepato-protective potential due to their strong antioxidant potential which helps in normalising the oxidative stress and repairing DNA damage. The above-mentioned studies provided a scientific basis for their folkloric uses in the management of liver ailments in traditional systems of medicines.
