Özet

In the cold climate regions, repeated freeze–thaw cycles negatively affect the mechanical behavior of clayey soil material. To minimize or eliminate these negative effects, soil stabilization is an inevitable method to enhance the mechanical properties and freeze–thaw resistance of clayey soil material. With stabilization, the permeability of soil reduces and its shear strength and freeze–thaw resistance increase. In this study, clayey soil material collected from Erzurum NE Turkey was stabilized by using quartzite material. Prepared mixtures by adding different percentages of quartzite material to the clayey soil material were compacted at the optimum moisture content to obtain quartzite material-stabilized samples. Also, unstabilized and stabilized samples were prepared for each combination to investigate the effect of quartzite material on the freeze–thaw resistance and these samples were exposed to the freeze–thaw cycles. The unexposed and exposed samples to the freeze–thaw were subjected to the related tests. The test results showed that quartzite material enhanced both the mechanical properties and the freeze–thaw resistance. As a result, the quartzite material can be successfully used as a natural additive material for the stabilization of clayey soil material in the geotechnical applications. The properties of clayey soil material can be improved the geotechnical applications in the cold regions by using this alternative natural material.
