The Upper Paleocene sequence in the Sinop Basin, Central Black Sea Region, is investigated
to determine the benthic and planktonic foraminiferal biozones. The
studied sequence belongs to the Upper Paleocene Atbasi Formation.
A section was measured from the formation. The succession includes
benthic and abundant planktonic foraminifera. The
benthic foraminiferal assemblages are made up of 27 species belonging to 22
genera, namely Ammodiscus, Anomalina, Bolivinopsis,
Cibicides, Cribrostomoides, Dentalina, Haplophragmoides, Gavelinella, Globulina,
Glomospira, Gyroidina, Lagena, Lenticulina, Nodosaria, Nodosariella, Pararotalia,
Planulina, Pullenia, Pulvinulinella, Robulus, Spirillina, Textularia.
The sequence also contains benthic foraminifera with hyaline calcareous,
calcareous and agglutinated cosmopolitan deep sea, eurybath and abyssal genera.
An Upper Paleocene
Lower planktonic foraminiferal Zone P4c was distinguished by using 15 species
belonging to 6 genera, consisting of Acarinina,
Chiloguembelina, Globanomalina, Morozovella, Parasubbotina, Subbotina. This
biozone is represented by a Acarinina
soldadoenssis-Globanomalina pseudomenardii biozone.
Based on the
foraminiferal assemblages, the
age of the studied sequnce is determined as Upper Paleocene.
