Energy consumption is an essential factor in realizing the growth and development processes of countries. It is
seen that the need for energy has increased after the industrial revolution. Thanks to energy use, production
capacities and technology levels increase rapidly, and thus growth and development processes accelerate.
However, when the sources from which energy is produced at the point of energy use are examined, it is seen
that the supply of these sources is limited and will run out one day. In addition, the use of these resources creates
another disadvantage in the destruction it causes to the environment.
This study examines the effects of renewable energy and fossil energy sources on the Turkish economy between
1990 and 2015. For this purpose, national income, renewable energy and fossil energy consumption data were
used to determine the relationship between the variables. In addition, import data is added to the model for
control variable purposes. All of the data used were obtained from the World Bank database. First, the
logarithmic transformation of the data was provided. In the continuation of the study, the ADF unit root test
was used to determine whether the series contained a unit root. As a result of the unit root test, it has been
determined that all series are stationary in the fixed model and the first difference.
For this reason, the Johansen cointegration test and VAR analysis were used to examine the relationship
between the data. According to the Johansen cointegration test, it was determined that there was a cointegrating
relationship between the series. Thus, the VAR Error Correction model was used to examine the long-term
results of the series. According to the findings obtained from the study, it has been determined that there is a
positive and significant relationship between renewable energy sources, fossil energy sources and imports to
national income in the long term. However, it has been determined that fossil energy sources have a more
significant impact on national income than renewable energy sources.
