Objective: Childhood cancers cover 0.5% to 4.6% of all cancers. An important and integral part of the care and
treatment of cancer patients is primary caregivers. Parents tend to over-protect their children with cancer. As the
disease progresses, children who initially meet their physical and psychosocial needs are more dependent on their
parents in meeting these needs as the problems related to the disease and treatment increase. In this period, the
stress of the parents increases, the coping strategies with events disturbs. The aim of this study was to determine
the effects of parental attitudes, coping skills and quality of life on a child's hopelessness, depression and quality
of life in children with cancer. Methods: Thirty patients with cancer in the age range of 7-18 years and 30 control
patients were included in the study. DAWBA which is a fully structured clinical interview tool to describe the
psychopathology in children, was performed to parents. In our study, the sociodemographic data collection form
was filled by a child psychiatrist. Parent Attitude Scales (evaluates parents' attitudes), Coping Attitudes
Assessment Scales (for coping strategies), and Quality of Life Scales were performed to parents.Depression Scale
for Children was applied to 7- 13 aged groups to determine the depression levels of children, Beck Depression
Scale was applied to children over 13 years of age. Result: Disease makes a larger independent contribution to all
psychopathological measures than any other investigated variable. Therefore, cancer patients should be closely
followed up in order to identify and timely treat any mental health problems that may arise. Since our work is still
continuing, it is planned to present the latest data at the congress due. Conclusions: It is known that anxiety,
depression, and overall psychopathology are more frequent in cancer patients compared to controls.
