Özet

In intermediate hosts, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps, named Coenurus cerebralis, may cause coenurosis, a common disease of the central nervous system in ruminants. This study reports clinical and pathological features of coenurosis diagnosed in 3 calves during slaughterhouse inspection. According to the owners, the infected animals have exhibited specific clinical signs (depression, uncontrolled movements, occasional circling, inability to swallow, ataxia, mild opisthotonos and impaired vision) and large coenurus cysts were found both in cerebellum and cerebrum. Histopathologically, in addition to congestions associated to severe cellular inflammation reactions and intense necrosis typically observed in coenurosis, degenerative changes in neurons were also recorded in the 3 cases and few large calcification areas were also focally observed in one case.
