Abstract:

Psychosocial Problems of Parents Whose Infants Are Hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Qualitative Study Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the psychosocial problems experienced by mothers and fathers whose babies are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Material and Method: The research was conducted using a qualitative research method with a phenomenological design at Bingöl State Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between October 2023 and July 2025. It was carried out with 24 participants selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected via a "Personal Information Form" and a "Semi-Structured Interview Form" and analyzed with thematic analysis and the MAXQDA program. Results: Based on the data obtained, parents' statements were analyzed and six main themes were identified: emotional problems, physical problems, social problems, economic problems, hospital-related problems, and coping strategies. Inadequate conditions in the hospital environment and communication problems increase parents' stress, while family dynamics and external support mechanisms play a critical role in overcoming this process. Conclusion: This study revealed that parents of infants hospitalized in the NICU experience multidimensional psychosocial problems. For parents of babies in the NICU, comprehensive support programs should be created to address the psychosocial problems they face during this difficult process.
