Abstract:

Purpose: This research aims to reveal the effectiveness of real-life materials in the teaching of daily weather events in life science lesson acquisitions with the participation of parents to students with moderate intellectual disabilities who receive education at the first level in special education practice schools. Method: In this study, the action research design, which is one of the qualitative research approaches, was used. The study group of the research consists of three students with moderate mental disabilities and three parents who were educated at the Erzurum Special Education Practice School in the Yakutiye district of Erzurum in the 2019-2020 academic year. In the research, a superficial evaluation form was used to determine the current status of special education students as a data collection tool. While the criterion-dependent measure tool was used to be used in the pre-application, post-application, and general evaluation stages, parent and teacher interview forms were used to determine the views of the practice teacher and parents on the practice. In addition, to evaluate the processes, ABC recording (anecdotal recording) was used to detect the stimuli before and after the behavior of the students with video recording and to predict the function of the behavior. In the analysis of the data, the descriptive analysis technique was used in accordance with the qualitative research approach. Findings: The results of the practices before and after the application were examined by the teacher with the criterion-dependent measurement tool for the first four weeks. In the data obtained, while the number of correct answers before the application was very low, it was determined that almost all of the answers given after the application were correct. It has been seen that the use of materials different from the realistic materials used in the implementation process in the general evaluation phase and correct answers to all questions contribute positively to the learning of daily weather events for students with moderate intellectual disabilities. Result: As a result of the applications, it was concluded that the use of realistic materials in the learning processes of students with moderate intellectual disability contributed to the realization of permanent learning.
