Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of learning diaries improving reflective thinking on academic achievement in the environment and society unit of the 10th grade geography course and to determine students' views on the learning diaries teaching method. Method: The study utilized embedded design, one of the mixed research methods that combine qualitative and quantitative research methods. The study group consists of 46 (DG=20, KG=26) 10th grade students studying in two different branches of a high school in Bayburt. As data collection tools, the Disaster Achievement Test was used to determine the academic achievement of the students, and a semi-structured interview form and learning diaries were used to determine the students' opinions about the learning diaries improving reflective thinking. The independent sample t-test was used in the analysis of data obtained from Disaster Achievement Test. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data obtained from the semi-structured interview form and learning diaries. Results: According to the findings, it was determined that there a to significant difference between the pre-test scores of the experimental and control groups in terms of academic achievement. Besides, there was a significant difference between the post-test scores in favor of the experimental group. In addition that, it was observed that the experimental group students generally had positive opinions about the learning diaries. Conclusion: As a result of the study, it was shown that the learning diaries improving reflective thinking both had a positive effect on the academic achievement of the students and the students had positive views about the learning diaries.
