Abstract:
Purpose: The condition of heart tissue affected by regular swimming exercise implemented on rats was aimed to be determined by morphometric measurements, some biochemical parameters and histopathological examinations.
Method: 20 two-month-old male rats were divided into control and exercise groups. The rats in the exercise group were given swimming exercise for 1 hour a day, 4 times a week, for 6 weeks. At the end of the experiment, blood, heart and tibia bone samples were taken from the rats. In order to determine the state of hypertrophy of the heart, the ratio of the heart weight to the length of the tibia of rats was evaluated. Biochemical parameters Histopathological examination by ELISA method Hematoxylin & Eosin staining data were analyzed by SPSS program.
Findings: Serum CK-MB and VEGF levels of rats in the exercise group were found to be statistically significantly higher than that in the control group while there was no significant difference in MDA, LDH and creatinine levels. SOD and GSH levels were found to be low in the exercise group (p ˂0,05). While the heart tissues of the rats in the control group had normal histological appearance, mild levels of mononuclear cell infiltration, hemorrhage, and degenerative changes were observed in the heart tissues of the rats in the exercise group (p ˂0,05). While weight gain was observed in the control group rats according to their month, it was determined that there was a smaller amount of weight gain in the exercise group rats. No significant difference was found in the values of heart weight, tibia length and tibia weight of the rats in the two groups (p >0,05). However, there was a difference in heart weight/tibia length (p ˂0,05).
Conclusions. It has been found that short-term and increasingly intense regular swimming
exercise performed in rats is effective in controlling body weight, but causes oxidative stress
and an increase in the value of CK-MB and VEGF. It should be investigated whether the results
of this study with rats also apply to humans. As there is a need for studies conducted on humans,
in order to more clearly understand the effect of severe regular exercise on the heart, long-term
studies involving different exercise protocols have been required.
