Abstract:

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of body image on acceptance of maternal role in pregnancy. Material and Method: The research was planned as a descriptive type. The research was conducted with 350 pregnant women who applied to Çorum Hitit University Erol Olçok Training and Research Hospital in the city center affiliated with Çorum Provincial Health Directorate between April 2024 and October 2024. Research data were collected through face-to-face interviews with Personal Information Form, Body Image Scale in Pregnancy and Prenatal Self-Assessment Scale's Acceptance of Maternal Role Subscale. Number, percentage, mean, t test, variance analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: The total score of Body Understanding Measure for Pregnancy Scale was found to be 96.81±19.10. The pregnant women scored 16.67±5.39 on the Preoccupation with Physical Appearance sub-dimension, 21.16±7.09 on the Dissatisfaction with Power-Related Aspects of the Person's Body sub-dimension, 8.63±3.27 on the Dissatisfaction with Skin Color sub-dimension, 14.9±3.8 on the Sexual Attractiveness sub-dimension, 9.90±4.24 on the Prioritization of Appearance over Function sub-dimension, 6.83±2.13 on the Behavioral Avoidance Related to Appearance sub-dimension, and 18.75±6.09 on the Dissatisfaction with Body Parts sub-dimension. The total score of the Maternal Role Acceptance Scale of the pregnant women was found to be 25.04±6.64. A statistically significant negative and low-level relationship was determined between the total score of the Body Image Scale in Pregnancy and the score of the Maternal Role Acceptance Scale. Conclusion: As the total score of the body image scale during pregnancy increases, the score of the acceptance of the maternal role scale decreases.
