Abstract:Individuals benefit from their income and wealth as well as various debt instruments while meeting their consumption needs. One of the most widely used borrowing instruments is consumer loans. Consumer loans, which enable individuals to meet their present needs with their future income, are mostly funded by banks. In Turkey, which has experienced many crises in the period from the 1990s to the 2001 crisis, individuals have kept demand for debt instruments low, especially by postponing consumption needs. When the development of consumer loans in Turkey after the crisis period was examined, it was determined that they showed great development after the 2000s. However, these developments in consumer credit are highly affected by macroeconomic factors. In this study, the relationship between consumer loans and GDP, interest rate, exchange rate, BIST100 Index and unemployment rate was determined by ARDL method. The data used in the analysis covers the period 2005:Q4-2018:Q4. As a result of the applied analysis, It was found that income elasticity is higher in terms of all sub-titles of consumer loans.
