Abstract:
Evaluation of Oral Health Findings and Competition Stress Levels of Athletes in Different Winter Sports Branches Aim: In our study, we aimed to examine the intraoral examination findings of elite (competitor) and beginner level athletes in winter sports branches such as alpine discipline, snowboard, biathlon, ski jumping and ice hockey, and to compare the stress levels before, during and after the competition and to evaluate the relationship between them. Materials and Methods: Our study includes a total of 91 people whose age range is between 12-16 within the scope of different winter sports branches and 71 of them at elite and 20 at beginner level. DMFT, DMFS, PUFA, OHI, BEWE (tooth wear due to bruxism, Atria) score, bad oral habits, dental trauma and occlusion-closing relationships were evaluated by performing intra-oral examinations of athletes. In addition, cortisol levels in saliva samples taken over 3 different time periods, before, during and after the competition, were measured using the ELISA method. The data was evaluated in SPSS-20 program. Results: 82.4% of elite athletes have no problems in terms of occlusion and closing relationships. The highest prevalence of PUFA was found in ice hockey athletes (6, 27.3%). OHI-d (0.7±0.3, p=0.007) and OHI (1.1±0.4, p=0.018) score averages of the starting group were found to be lower than in other sports. In winter sports, no signs of dental trauma caused by sports activity were found. It was found that the BEWE scores of athletes in the ice hockey players were similar to those in the ski jumping athletes and lower than in other groups (p=0.034). The average cortisol values between sports branches were listed as biathlon > snowbord > alpine skiing > ice hockey > ski jumping (p<0.001). When an intra-branch comparison was made, only the cortisol level of the alpine ski racers after the competition was found to be higher than before the competition (p=0.029). Conclusion: From saliva samples taken at the competition stages of athletes in winter sports, it can be said that the stress levels of athletes vary depending on the branch of the sports, and there is a negative relationship between the competition stress levels and oral and dental health. In winter sports activities, measures to improve oral health should be disseminated. Key words: winter sports, oral health, saliva cortisol, tooth injury, bruxism
