Abstract:
Aim: The purpose of this study was determining motivational factors that play
role in taking part in snow and ice sports of national athletes in Erzurum, the richest city
in Turkey in respect of facilities of snow sports.
Material and Methods: In the research scope, a survey was applied to
determine the reasons for choosing sport branches and data was examined through
SPSS 17 program. The differences were examined in data through Kruskal-Wallis test.
The alpha significance level was stated as p<0.05. The sample of this research
constituted a total of 83 national athletes including 23 women, 60 men who have been
national athletes in snow sports in Erzurum.
Results: According to the findings, it was found that parents and trainers have an
important role on athletes, friends have medium effect and teachers have no effect on
them. It was observed that environmental conditions have little effect and television has
medium effect for participating in sport. Significant difference was found between
athletes’ desire for taking part in national team, desire for having a smart appearance,
desire for being a trainer in the future, desire for having university education in sports
and their tendency for snow sports (p<0.05). While there was significant difference
between athletes’ educational levels and being healthy (p<0.05), the most significant
difference was observed in athletes who are at the level of primary school degree. The
same result was observed in desire for being trainer.
Conclusion and Suggestions: It can be said that national athletes chose this
sport to be national athlete, represent their country and have occupation in the future;
and their parents were the most effective people for them in choosing this sport.
According to these results, it can be said as recommendations of this study that parents
should be aware of sports and have knowledge about sports culture in order to be able to
motive their children to sports.
