Abstract:

Aim: This study aims to investigate the outcome of health belief model-based education on disease adaptation and fatalistic health behaviour in patients with diabetes. Material and method: This research was conducted as pretest-posttest control group design, and was studied between October and November 2021 in a family health center located in Kars province. Determined by the power analysis tests, 128 individuals were included in the experiment; 64 of these patientswere designed as the test group, 64 were as the control group.Three forms; Patient Information Form, Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale and Health Fatalism Scale, were used to collect the data. The patients in the experimental group were trained on diabetes based on the health belief model, which consisted of 4 sessions. The SPSS 25.0 statistical package program was used in the coding, statistical analysis, and evaluation of the data. Mean, standard deviation, number, and percentages as well as t-test and Mann Whitney U analysis in independent groups; t-testandthe chi-square test were used in dependent groups in data evaluation according to data distribution characteristics. Results:In the experiment group, 70.3% of the patients were female and 79.7% of them were married individuals; additionally 65.6% of the control group were female and 76.6% of them were married.Test group patients who attended health belief model-based education had a mean score of 73.63±7.90 as pretest on Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale, whereas posttest mean score was high as 81.53±5.50 (p<0.05). Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in the scores ofthe Health Fatalism Scale in the same group, such as pretest mean score was 63.81±9.67 whereas posttest average score was 34.78±6.93 (p<0.05). In spite of these changes in the test group, control patients showed a significant decrease in scores of Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale with a mean pretest score of 78.69±6.69 and posttest score of 71.77±5.16. Moreover, this group had a prominent increase in mean scores ofthe Health Fatalism Scale from58.97±12.30 to 64.64±12.28 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Diabetes education given to patients based on the Health Belief Model had a positive effect on disease adaptation and fatalistic health behaviours. Thus, it is recommended to increase the education sessions of individuals with diabetest develop healthy life behaviours, increase adaption to the disease, and reduce the perception of fatalism.
