Abstract:

Socrates says "know thyself". However philosophers try to "know universe" since the time of Plato. It is obvious that man knowing himself will experience existence and being existent and know them from the first hand. However man trying to understand universe seek ways to predict the need of "knowing thyself" through indirect or second hand knowledge of other beings. That's why there will be many differences between man trying to know himself and the one trying to know the universe with respect to civilization. In relation to the methods of knowing the universe, deduction of the symbolic definition of "knowing thyself" which is "I think therefore I am", besides the traditional knowledge acceptance such as beliefs regarded as knowledge, knowledge regarded as beliefs, by taking limits of language as the basis, belief epistemological foundation of new knowledge will be acquired. It is searched for a path stretching from a civilization illuminated by the evidences of theological and of epistemological kind of belief to a civilization which is a new cultural level. For the first step the definitions of customs, traditions, culture and civilization were clarified. As for the acceptance of civilization improvement through knowledge, it is tried to show that it includes by showing implicit acceptances of positivism and cultural atheism, either god being known according to traditional knowledge acceptance or inevitability of cultural improvement fed by theological belief.
