Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose is to examine the relationship between the sportive success
statuses (Olympic Winter Games and World Ski Championships) and winter tourism
levels of Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Norway, Russia and the
United States of America (USA).
Material Method: The population of the research consists of Austria, Italy,
Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Russia, France, USA and Canada which have organized
Olympic Winter Games (OWG) and World Ski Championships (WSC). Based on the
results of the competitions accessed from the FIS database, the sportive success points
(SSP) of the countries were determined and the points during the periods were calculated.
SPSS (Version 22) statistical program was used for data analysis.
Findings: The country, which has the highest number in terms of organizing
OWG and WSC, was the USA. The highest number of FIS-approved tracks belongs to
Italy in technical branches and the USA in speed branches. The most successful country
in females and males in Winter Olympics and World Championships was Austria. A
significant difference was detected between the number of athletes and SSP in Austria,
Norway, USA and Italy. A significant difference was detected between female and male
athletes in the 3rd and 4th periods of the Olympic periods. In Germany, female athletes
significantly received higher points than males in terms of SSP. The USA has the highest
number of national skiers. The highest tourism income was obtained in France in Europe
and USA on the American Continent.
Result: It was concluded that the countries, which precede in the sportive
organization and sportive success in the alpine skiing discipline, also produce serious
income in winter tourism, these countries have been active in the period from the
organization of the first olympic and world championships until today and received
significant share from winter tourism (ski center, facility, infrastructure). Austria is the
most successful country for men and women. It is concluded that the countries in the Alps
are more successful in winter tourism and sporting success than USA, Canada and Russia.
