The growth of plants is very
strongly restricted and even modified by the environments the plants experiences.
Indeed plants are product of two major determinants, i.e. first their
replication or genetic capabilities and second their environments. By breeding,
selection, and choice we can modify genetic capability, however, our ability to
modify environment is much less successful. Indeed naturally imposed
environmental stresses are experienced by crops in virtually all ecosystems. It
has been documented that environmental stresses such as extreme temperatures
(heat and cold) are major restrains worldwide against regularly obtaining
maximum plant production. In nearly all or Balkan countries plants commonly
experience the strong influence of extreme temperatures. The severity of those
stresses vary from short-terms, to the entire growing season, furthermore the
severity is not predictable.
