Proje Özeti

This study aims to experimentally investigate the applicability of the traditional Japanese paper-making technique, Momigami, to Ottoman Classical Period palace caftans. Within this scope, Ottoman and Japanese clothing cultures, which developed in different geographical contexts, are comparatively examined through caftan and kamiko garments; and the producibility of 15th–16th century Ottoman palace caftans using the Momigami technique is explored. Based on the literature review, it is identified that Ottoman palace caftans are associated with front-opening garment forms extending back to Central Asia, while kamiko garments are produced by processing washi paper through the Momigami technique to obtain a textile-like surface, and were particularly used during the Heian and Kamakura periods. The study adopts a qualitative research method, combining literature review, museum-based analyses, and experimental workshop practices. In this context, a capsule collection titled “kaftan-kamiko” was developed, through which the Ottoman caftan form was re-produced using the Momigami technique. Findings indicate that paper-based surfaces produced through Momigami are structurally compatible with the straight-cut construction of Ottoman caftans, revealing a structural correspondence between the two garment forms. This suggests that the similarity between them should be evaluated not only at a visual level but also within the framework of formal continuity.
