Project Abstract

The primary goals of this project are to identify the common features of folk literature texts, mostly titled isnad, written in **Chagatai** by Muslim Turkic peoples in Central Asia during the pre-modern period, to outline the conceptual framework of this genre, and to describe and understand the localization process of the Chagatai written language after the 18th century through the isnad manuscripts written in East Turkistan. To achieve these goals, eighteen manuscript texts found in the Berlin State Library and Lund University Library were analyzed as part of the project. First, the transliteration of these manuscripts, all written in the East Turkistan region, was carried out by considering the pronunciations of linguistic units in the contemporary Uighur written language, particularly the Kashgar and Yarkand dialects. During the transliteration phase, findings related to spelling were compiled. After the transliterated texts were created, the content and structural features of the **isnad** genre were identified, and its conceptual framework was outlined. This step was followed by the process of creating a grammatical sequence. During this stage, the vocabulary of the texts was extracted while findings on phonology and morphology were identified and compiled for future classification. The compiled data was then examined to determine the local elements in Chagatai.
