BACKGROUND AND AIM:The use of CAA
in the treatment of refluxing saphenous veins has increased in the last decade,
and its effectiveness and safety have been proven by many studies. The
objective of this single center prospective observational study is to evaluate
the 5-year results of cyanoacrylate ablation (CAA) method in venous
insufficiency.
METHODS:There were 210 subjects
were treated with the CAA between April 2014 and June 2016. The protocol included
physical and colour Doppler ultrasonography examination, venous clinical
severity score and quality of life assessment before and after the procedure.
The primary endpoint was treated veins closure rates and the secondary endpoint
was clinical improvement.
RESULTS:In total, 236 ablation
procedures were successfully completed on 210 subjects. 136 (64.8%) of them
completed the 5-year follow-up visits. The mean follow-up period was 76 months.
The treated saphenous vens complete closure rate were 92.1% at five-year.
Various interventions were performed for varicose veins in 12(8.8%) patients
during their follow-up from 3rd month to 5th year. Although clinical and
quality of life improvement was slowed compared to previous follow-ups, they
were significantly increased compared to baseline values. Device or
procedure-related late side effects were not observed during the long-term
period.
CONCLUSIONS:This study
demonstrated that long-term efficacy and safety of CAA in the treatment of
refluxing saphenous veins with high closure rates and significant clinical and
quality of life improvement. We think that the long-term results of many
studies will support this results.
