Özet

Introduction

Functional Medicine is individualized, personalized precision and holistic medicine that focuses on

understanding and eliminating the root causes of diseases rather than suppressing the symptoms of

diseases.

Aim

To explain the importance of functional and holistic approach for brain disease.

Methods

To review functional therapy and chronical degenerative neurologic and neuropsychiatric disease.

Results

A diagnosis may be the result of more than one cause. For example, depression can be caused by many

different factors, including inflammation (Figure 1). Likewise, a cause such as inflammation can lead to

a number of different diagnoses, including depression (Figure 2). The exact manifestation of each cause

depends on the individual's genes, environment, and lifestyle, and only treatments for the right cause

will provide lasting benefit beyond suppression of symptoms.Functional medicine evaluates the individual as a mental and physical whole. It takes a detailed and

extensive history covering the entire life process from birth. The grounds that cause the formation of the

disease reveal the causes chronologically. It evaluates genetic, epigenetic, environmental toxin

exposure, toxic social relationships, hormonal axis status, health of digestive and excretion systems,

immune system, biotransformation and detoxification status, energy and mitochondrial health. It takes

psychosocial factors into account. For this, it uses comprehensive, sensitive and most advanced

laboratory methods and repeats it at regular intervals for optimum health.Functional medicine interprets the mental/body integrity and mental health, lifestyle factors, nutrition

and activity level of the person together. Identifies the triggers and factors that accelerate the onset of

the disease.

Functional Medicine, unlike classical medicine, includes individualized, personalized and sensitive

medicine practices instead of giving the same standard treatment to every patient. It reverses the

processes that cause the disease in chronic degenerative diseases. Thus, it aims to heal the disease and

regain health. The basic eight ensures that the loops in the system work correctly again. It is based on

repairing the entire spiritual and biological system. Functional medicine applies comprehensive current

research-based therapeutic practices and necessary lifestyle and nutritional changes as a whole.

It covers the most advanced and holistic treatment modalities in addition to the evidence-based diagnosis

and treatment methods in classical medicine. It can predict the diseases that may arise and prevent them

with a preventive approach.

It deals with the brain and brain diseases holistically in the context of whole body health and ensures

the reorganization of the correct functioning by eliminating the causes, cleaning the toxins, correcting

the healthy diet and lifestyle factors. It corrects pathological conditions in basic cellular cycles. It makes

the cellular cycles work properly again by making the necessary supplements. It aims to prevent chronic

inflammation and chronic stress, treat it and eliminate the causes. Thus, it aims to stop

neuroinflammation and to prevent neurodegenerative diseases that may occur over many years as a

result. Applies treatments aimed at repairing existing pathologies and recovery of the process. It uses

treatments and protective supports that increase neuroplasticity and release of brain-derived neurotropic

factor (BDNF), providing cell regeneration.

Replaces the inflammatory, acidic, sickening and aging diet (processed foods, sugar and fructosecontaining

beverages, gluten-containing grains, casein-containing dairy products, chemical-packed

ready-to-eat foods) with an anti-inflammatory, alkaline, low-glycemic-load, antiaging and healing diet

(fresh vegetables and fruit in moderation). Provides elimination of problems in hormonal, cardiometabolic

and metabolic balance; It improves metabolic syndrome, thyroid functions, cortisol,

cholesterol, blood sugar levels. It benefits from system restorative practices such as intermittent fasting

and fasting for the treatment of energy balance and metabolic disordersFor this, it addresses and corrects

the problems in the functioning of the excretory system and excretion pathways such as sweating. Leaky

brain syndrome and the resulting neuroinflammation are caused by leaky gut, dysbiosis, toxins, and

immunogens. Therefore, eliminating the causes of intestinal permeability, repairing the intestinal lining,

restoring the balance of diet and microbiota is the first step of treatment for a healthy brain. It improves

mitochondrial health, which is the center of the energy, respiratory and oxidation system, and stimulates

mitochondrial biogenesis.

Oxidative stress may leads to protein oxidation tha is a biomarker for many neurodegenerative diseases.

ROS (reactive oxygen species) cause protein oxidation. A lack of antioxidants, excess of oxygen and

lipid and metal ions can generate free radicals. The protein oxidation depends on amino acid

compositions. Lysine, histidine, arginine, methionine, cysteine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, threonine,

glutamic acid, and proline residues incline oxidation. Some proteins have metal binding regions. Metal

ions such as copper, zinc, and iron, are capable of redox. Functional medicine focus reduces the toxin

load of the body and brain tissue. Detoxification systems regulate Phase I, Phase 2, and Phase 3, reducing homocysteine and uric acid levels. Some heavy metal chelation therapy applied. Antioxidan capacity

make increase by glutathion or N-acetyl cysteine that glutathion precursor, selenium, Vitamin C and E.

Environmental pH is to be critical for protein aggregation. Acidic pH facilitates generation of PrPSc in

prion diseases. α-Syn agregation and Parkinson Diseases is accelerated in low pH. For these reasons

acidic nurtitions and condition should be prevent and alkaline environment should be occurred.

Functional medicine recommand alkaline and anti-inflamatory nutrition.

It has a holistic approach to prevent and cure neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases such

as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Dementia, Depression, anxiety, mood disorder and bipolar disease,

schizophrenia caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. It aims to repair the cell wall and protect the

functions of the blood-brain barrier. For this, it benefits from the necessary nutraceutical and botanical

supports. It replaces the macro and micro nutrients that are missing or keep the cellular cycles working

properly. For this purpose, it benefits from the necessary vitamins and trace elements. It fulfills the needs

such as omega-3, alpha linoleic acid, methyl cobalamin, methyl folate, magnesium, zinc, iron and

copper. It provides mental and spiritual health, vitality of sensory and motor functions by stimulating

mitochondrial oxygenation and biogenesis with supplements such as Carnitine, Coezyme Q-H or Q10,

Alpha-lipoic acid. It supports the best preservation of functions with choline, melatonin and many other

brain supports.

Mindfullnes provides the re-establishment of mind-body harmony with stress management

methods such as yoga, raises awareness, and plans the necessary actions to repair existing

psychological traumas. Provides prescriptions for lifestyle recommendations, such as moderate

exercise.

Conclusion

In summary, the functional and holistic approach does not see brain diseases only as diseases of

the neurological system. It holistically corrects the entire system and matrix for brain health.
