Students' Views About the E-Flipped Classroom Model

The distance education activities, known as "emergency remote education," were moved to online learning environments during the Covid-19 Pandemic. To make the instruction more effective, efficient, and engaging, it has become a necessity to revisit the current distance education strategies by considering the requirements of online learning contexts. One of the instructional strategies suggested during this process is the adaptation of the conventional flipped classroom model to online instruction. This new model, referred as the e-flipped or online flipped classroom in the literature, requires traditional flipped classroom processes to be conducted entirely online. In this regard, the purpose of the current study is to reveal students' opinions towards an information technology course designed and managed by an e-flipped classroom model. A total of 297 undergraduate students from different disciplines participated in the study. Moodle platform was used as a learning management system on which the instructor shared course materials and carried out live class learning activities, and students submitted the assignments. The course included fourteen weeks of online learning activities. Instead of using the conventional presentation methods, learning strategies requiring higher cognitive skills such as problem-solving and discussions were used during the live classes. At the end of the semester, a survey including 14 questions was used. The results indicated that the course was sufficient and helpful for learning. The students liked it, the materials and activities were motivating, and the pre-sharing of the course videos was suitable for the student's learning style. In addition, it was understood that the students put much effort into fulfilling the course requirements. The results of the current study imply that although students demand conventional face-to-face learning after the Pandemic, the e-flipped model could be a suitable option in order to maintain online education more efficiently in emergencies.
