Özet

Roofs bear snow loads and ensure the thermal comfort of the building as well as their other tasks such as the protection of buildings from external weather conditions like snow, rain, wind and sun. However, the exposure to heavy snowfall and cold weather conditions in the region lead snow cover to not melt and stay longer on the land and the roof surfaces. The accumulated snow on the roof is frozen and transformed into ice mass and icicles, then, with warming air, they fall down and bring about a large number of material damage and fatal accidents. In this context, this study, considering the factors, which prevent the discharge of snow from the roof and lead to the formation of ice and icicles, aims to seek solutions in four titles, which are (i) the form and design of roofs, (ii) roofing system design, (iii) the roof covering materials and (iv) the use of alternative methods.
