In the present work, adsorption of basic red 46 (BR46) by nano-sized montmorillonite (MMT)/calcium alginate (CA) composite was optimized using central composite design. The maximum dye removal of 85.07% was obtained at an initial dye concentration of 30 mg L-1, adsorbent dosage of 2 g L-1, contact time of 60 min and temperature of 25 degrees C. The adsorption capacity decreased with decreasing both initial pH and mixing speed. The pseudo-second order kinetic model had the highest correlation coefficient (R-2 = 1.00). Based on the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity of MMT/CA was about 35 mg g(-1). (C) 2014 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Published by Elsevier B.V.
