High-technology manufacturing and environment nexus: Insights from Spanish manufacturing titans

Özet

Environmental sustainability has become a central policy objective in the European Union (EU), yet the environmental implications of high-technology manufacturing remain insufficiently understood. This study examines whether the expansion of high-technology manufacturing contributes to environmental sustainability in Spain while accounting for broader economic and energy conditions through an integrated theoretical lens. We analyzed annual data pertaining to the period 1992–2022 with an augmented autoregressive distributed lag model to evaluate both short-run and long-run relationships. The results indicate that high-technology manufacturing is not statistically associated with environmental sustainability in Spain. Specifically, industrial upgrading alone has not yet produced measurable sustainability gains. Rather than supporting an automatic link between industrial upgrading and sustainability, the findings show that the environmental benefits often associated with high-technology manufacturing depend on broader structural conditions. This remains true even in a country closely aligned with the EU's green transition agenda. With a direct focus on the nexus of high-technology manufacturing and environmental sustainability, this study, through linking biocapacity and ecological footprint, clarifies the conditions under which industrial transformation contributes to sustainability in Spain.
