A Critical Study of the Depiction of Hazrat ʿUmar

Although there exsts a substantal body of research n Arabc, Turksh, and Western lterature

on the personalty and leadershp of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, no ndependent study has focused

specfcally on hs physcal characterstcs. Ths study ams to present the most coherent and

relable depcton of ʿUmar’s physcal appearance by complng and comparng the dverse—

and at tmes conflctng—reports found n classcal sources. Elements such as hs heght,

weght, har and beard structure, eyes, skn color, and other bodly features are examned wthn

the framework of these narratons, whle exaggerated descrptons and the stylstc conventons

of the perod are carefully dstngushed. The study also dscusses dsputed attrbutes n detal,

partcularly evaluatng the dfferng reports on hs complexon and har characterstcs n

relaton to hstorcal and envronmental factors. In lght of these fndngs, the research offers a

comprehensve and analytcal portrat of ʿUmar’s physcal appearance
