Communication skills in medicine are the main element of a meaningful and safe relationship
between doctors and patients. The process of healing a patient requires a holistic understanding
and approach far beyond treating it. Communication is the key component of the doctor-patient relationship,
and good communication has proven benefits for both. The most important obstacle to effective
communication between doctors and patients is the insufficient knowledge and education on
communication. Communication is a basic clinical skill that can be learnt, taught and developed. Communication
skills are among the graduate qualifications and physician roles of medical schools. It should
be taught to medical students both in undergraduate and postgraduate terms with the same diligence as
other medical sciences. In this article, it is aimed to emphasise the place and necessity of communication
skills training in medical education, the effects of patient-physician communication on physician,
patient and health outcomes and the opportunities provided by good communication in medicine based
on evidence.
