COVID -19 Pandemisi Çocuklarda Daimi Dişlerin Çekimlerinde Artışa Neden Oldu Mu?

Özet

AMAÇ: Çalışmamızda COVID-19 pandemisinin çocuklarda daimi dişlerin çekilme oranları üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.

GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Çalışmamızda COVID-19 pandemisinin öncesi, esnası ve sonrasında daimi diş çekim oranlarının karşılaştırılması amacıyla Mart 2017’den Mart 2023’ kadar Atatürk Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği fakültesine başvuran 6-14 yaş grubu çocukların retrospektif kayıtlarına ulaşıldı. Kayıtlardan elde edilen veriler SPSS 26.0 programı ile değerlendirilmiştir.

BULGULAR: Fakültemize diş çekimi için pandemi öncesi dönemde başvuran pediatrik hastalardan toplam 30.805 diş çekiminden 635 adeti daimi 1.molar diş çekimi, 43 diğer daimi dişlerin çekimi olmak üzere toplamda 678 (%2.2) adet diş çekimi yapılmıştır. Pandemi döneminde başvuran hastalardan toplam 7553 diş çekiminden 389 adeti daimi 1.molar diş çekimi, 21 adet diğer daimi dişlerin çekimi olmak üzere toplam 410 (%5.42) adet diş çekimi yapılmıştır. Pandemi sonrası dönemde ise başvuran hastalardan toplam 4279 diş çekiminden 365 adeti daimi 1.molar diş çekimi, 40 adet diğer daimi dişlerin çekimi olmak üzere toplam 405 (%9.46) adet daimi diş çekimi yapıldığı saptanmıştır. Yapılan ANOVA analizine göre pandemi sonrası dönemde diş çekimi oranında önceki yıllara göre istatiksel anlamda anlamlı farklılık bulunmuştur (p<0.05).

SONUÇ: Fakültemize tedavi gören pediatrik hastaların diş çekimlerini yıllara göre kıyasladığımızda pandemi, hastalarda oral hijyen eksikliği ve çürük nedeniyle kaybedilen daimi diş sayısındaki artışa sebep olmuştur. Bu sebeple pandemi gibi sağlık hizmetlerine ulaşmanın güç olduğu olağanüstü durumlarda toplumun ağız hijyenine ekstra önem vermesi gerekmektedir. Bu amaçla sosyal medya ve görsel medyada toplumu bilinçlendirici kamu spotlarına daha fazla yer verilmesi, tele diş hekimliği hizmetlerinin yaygınlaştırılması için alt yapı oluşturulması gereklidir.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the extraction rates of permanent teeth in children.

MATERIAL AND METHOD: In our study, retrospective records of children aged 6-14 who presented to the Atatürk University Faculty of Dentistry from March 2017 to March 2023 were accessed to compare the rates of permanent tooth extractions before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The data obtained from the records were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program.

RESULTS: Among pediatric patients who sought dental extractions before the pandemic, a total of 678 (2.2%) extractions were performed, including 635 extractions of permanent first molars and 43 extractions of other permanent teeth out of a total of 30,805 extractions. During the pandemic, a total of 410 (5.42%) extractions were performed, including 389 extractions of permanent first molars and 21 extractions of other permanent teeth out of a total of 7,553 extractions. In the post-pandemic period, a total of 405 (9.46%) permanent tooth extractions were performed, including 365 extractions of permanent first molars and 40 extractions of other permanent teeth out of a total of 4,279 extractions. According to the ANOVA analysis, there was a statistically significant difference in the extraction rate after the pandemic compared to previous years (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION: When comparing the tooth extractions of pediatric patients treated at our faculty over the years, the pandemic led to an increase in the number of permanent teeth lost due to poor oral hygiene and decay. Therefore, in extraordinary situations like a pandemic where access to healthcare services becomes challenging, the society should place extra emphasis on oral hygiene. To achieve this, it is necessary to increase public awareness through social media and visual media with informative public service announcements and establish infrastructure for widespread tele-dentistry services
