During the past half-century, internationalization has been a key
aspect of the reform agenda in tertiary education. As the lingua franca of the
current age, English is used for academic purposes to enhance the
internationalization in academia all over the world. English for Academic
Purposes, or EAP, is defined by Gillett (2022) as “the language and
associated practices that people need in order to undertake study or work in
English medium higher education” (p.1). Once regarded as a minor branch
of English Language Teaching (ELT), EAP has now become a fundamental
branch with its own body of professionals (British Association of Lecturers
in English for Academic Purposes, BALEAP), professional journals (Journal
of English for Academic Purposes, JEAP), approaches and methods, and
teaching materials. EAP teachers rely on materials to support their teaching
and their students’ learning. This chapter sets out to present some issues that
are specific to designing EAP materials by consideration of them under three
factors: contextual, teacher, and learner variables.
