AIM: The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the effects of acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) and neutral sodium fluoride (NaF) on the surface roughness of different restorative materials.

METHOD: A total of 72 disc-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were prepared from four restorative materials (Beautifil Bulk Flowable, Beautifil Flow Plus, GC G-ænial A’Chord, and VOCO Glassiosite), with 18 specimens per material. The specimen surfaces were polished sequentially using medium, fine, and superfine aluminum oxide-coated Sof-Lex discs (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA), with each disc applied for 30 seconds. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours, and baseline surface roughness (Ra) was measured using a profilometer. Subsequently, two different APF gels (Polimo and Ionite) and NaF were applied, and surface roughness was remeasured. The effects of restorative material and fluoride preparation and their interaction were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, while within-material comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA (p<0.05).

RESULTS: Restorative material type had no significant effect on surface roughness (p=0.296), whereas fluoride preparations had a significant effect (p=0.001). Surface roughness was significantly lower in the NaF group than at baseline and in the Polimo APF group (p<0.05). The material–agent interaction was not significant (p=0.153). Only Beautifil Flow Plus showed significantly lower surface roughness after NaF application (p=0.001).

CONCLUSIONS: APF applications did not significantly alter surface roughness, whereas NaF was associated with lower surface roughness values.
