Historical relations between Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire are typically examined in the literature through the lens of military and political conflicts centered on the Habsburg Dynasty; the role of other significant power centers—such as Saxony—that shaped the continent’s culture and diplomacy in these interactions is, however, often overlooked. By focusing on this historical and geographical gap, this study examines the “Turquerie,” “Türkenmode,” and “Alla Turca” trends in Turkish fashion that swept through European courts in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, through the lens of Augustus the Strong’s vision, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. The central focus of the study is the “Türckische Cammer” (Turkish Chamber)—established in Dresden and today one of Europe’s most magnificent collections of Ottoman art and weapons—along with the Janissary guard unit designed by Augustus the Strong. The interest in Ottoman artifacts, which had developed through war booty obtained from major military conflicts such as the Second Siege of Vienna, evolved during the reign of Augustus the Strong into a more deliberate tool of cultural diplomacy, aesthetic admiration, and the display of monarchical power.

Thus, this study reveals the historical evolution of the Ottoman image in the Eastern European imagination—from that of a “feared and destructive enemy” to a symbol of “prestige, elegance, and splendor” emulated in royal courts. By combining archival documents with tangible collection data, these findings move beyond the traditional Habsburg-centered historical narrative to offer a multidimensional approach to Ottoman-Eastern European relations through the lenses of diplomacy, art, and the construction of authority.
