Turkey dominates world hazelnut production and is the centre of origin of the hazelnut. Hazelnuts make a significant contribution to Turkey's exports, as well as being a source of income for a large number of family farms in the Black Sea region. In recent years, the Turkish hazelnut market has encountered production surpluses that cannot be reduced by domestic consumption or foreign trade. Possible solutions to this problem include restricting hazelnut planted areas in lowlands, reducing price support, abolishing export levies and increasing domestic and foreign demand by price and product differentiation, and seeking new markets abroad.
