Özet

Much ink has flown on the significance of various affective variables, such as anxiety and motivation in L2 learning; nevertheless, the associations between perfectionism, grit, and enjoyment in predicting L2 writing achievement (WA) remain underexplored. Underpinned by Positive Psychology as a theoretical framework, this study sought to fill that void by examining how adaptive perfectionism, L2 grit, and writing enjoyment (WE) are associated with EFL learners’ L2 writing outcomes, since critical attention should be paid to understanding the role that psycho-emotional factors play in L2 WA. Adopting a correlational survey design, this quantitative research was conducted with 543 undergraduate English majors in Turkey, selected via convenience sampling. Data were collected using students’ writing course grades along with three validated scales. We employed structural equation modelling to examine the direct and indirect effects of adaptive perfectionism on L2 WA. Findings emerged from our research indicated that adaptive perfectionism exhibited strong and moderate positive associations with L2 grit and WE, respectively. Also, L2 grit was found to be moderately and positively related to L2 WA, while L2 WE showed a small-to-moderate positive association with L2 WA. The results were consistent with the proposed parallel mediation model, in which the association of adaptive perfectionism with L2 WA operates through L2 grit and L2 WE. By highlighting the associations among individual traits and L2 WA, this study offers pedagogical implications for writing instruction in L2 classes.
