Dünyanın en büyük endüstrilerinden biri olan turizm endüstrisi çevresel kaynakları sıkça kullanmaktadır. Sürdürülebilirlikle doğrudan ilişkili olan ve daha çok doğal kaynaklara dayalı olan turizm, sürdürebilirlik ilkelerinin benimsenmesi gereken endüstrilerden bir tanesidir. Bununla birlikte, turizm sektörünün büyük çoğunluğunu oluşturan konaklama işletmelerinin sürdürülebilir olması da zamanla önem kazanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, diğer endüstrilerde olduğu gibi turizm endüstrisinde de konaklama işletmelerinin başında gelen otellerin ya da diğer binaların sürdürülebilirliklerini değerlendirme gereksinimi ortaya çıkmıştır. Binaların sürdürülebilirliklerini değerlendiren yeşil bina sertifikasyon sistemleri arasında bulunan LEED sertifikasyon sistemi, diğer sektörlerdeki bina türlerinde olduğu gibi turizm yapıları ve otellerde de yaygın olarak kullanılan bina sürdürülebilirlik değerlendirme sistemlerinden biridir. LEED sertifikasyon sistemi ile binaların sürdürülebilirlikleri belirli başlıklar altında değerlendirilerek puanlandırılmaktadır. Bu puanlama ile binalar sertifika gruplarına göre farklı şekilde sınıflandırılmaktadır.
LEED sertifikasyon sistemi içerisinde kendi değerlendirmesine göre yapılan sınıflandırmanın yanı sıra literatür incelendiğinde otellerle ilgili ya da LEED sertifikasyon sistemi ile ilgili yapılmış birçok çalışmanın mevcut olduğu fakat bu çalışmalarda binaların LEED sertifikasyon sistemine göre sınıflandırıldığı görülmektedir. Yapılan çalışmaların LEED sertifika sistemine göre sınıflandırma yapıyor olması alınan LEED sertifika çeşitlerinin daha iyi anlaşılmasını sağlamaktadır. Bununla birlikte konaklama çeşitleri vedâhil oldukları yıldız sistemleri bakımından hangi otel tiplerinin sürdürülebilirliğe önem verdiği ve hangi tür otel yapılarının daha fazla önem vermesi gerektiği gibi konular henüz bilinmemektedir. Bu anlamda çalışma kapsamında, literatürdeki bu konu açığının kapatılmasına katkıda bulunulması; sürdürülebilirlik konusunda üzerinde durulması gereken konaklama tiplerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmaktadır.
Bu amaç doğrultusunda çalışmada, LEED sertifikasyon sisteminde arama yapılarak LEED sertifikasyon sisteminde kayıtlı ve hala aktif LEED sertifikasına sahip 318 otel belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen oteller konaklama amaçlarına ve yıldız sayılarına göre sınıflandırılarak irdelenmiştir. İrdeleme için LEED sertifikasyon sistemi ve otellere ait orijinal web siteleri kullanılarak oluşturulan tablolar yardımıyla otellerin yıldız sayıları, sertifika düzeyleri, sertifika çeşitleri ve konaklama amaçları tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda hangi otel çeşidinin sertifikasyon sistemine daha az, hangi otel çeşidinin daha çok önem verdiği ortaya konulmuş; sürdürülebilirliğe daha az önem verdiği yorumlanan otel tipleri için önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
The tourism industry, one of the largest industries in the world, frequently uses environmental resources. Tourism, which is directly related to sustainability and is mostly based on natural resources, is one of the industries where sustainability principles should be adopted. With this, the sustainability of accommodation businesses that make up the majority of the tourism sector gains importance over time. In this context, the necessity of evaluating the sustainability of hotels or other buildings, which are the leading accommodation businesses, has emerged in the tourism industry, as in other industries. The LEED certification system, which is among the green building certification systems that evaluates the sustainability of buildings, is one of the building sustainability assessment systems that are widely used in tourism structures and hotels as in other sectors and building types of these sectors.With the LEED certification system, the sustainability of the buildings is evaluated and scored under some different headings. With this scoring, buildings are classified differently according to certificate groups.
In addition to the classification made according to its own assessment within the LEED certification system, when the literature is examined, there are many studies about hotels or the LEED certification system; However, these studies show that the buildings are classified according to the LEED certification system.The fact that the studies conducted are classifying according to the LEED certification system provides a better understanding of the LEED certificate types received. However, it is not yet known which hotel types give importance to sustainability in terms of accommodation types and star systems they are included in, and which types of hotel structures should pay more attention. In this sense, within the scope of the study, contributing to closing this issue in the literature; It is aimed to determine the types of accommodation that should be focused on in terms of sustainability.
In line with this purpose, the study determined 318 hotels registered in the LEED certification system and still hold an active LEED certificate by searching the LEED certification system. The determined hotels have been categorized according to their accommodation purposes and number of stars. Star ratings, certificate levels, certificate types and accommodation purposes of the hotels were determined with the help of tables created using the LEED certification system and the original websites of the hotels for evaluation. As a result of the study, it was revealed that which hotel type gives less importance to the certification system; Suggestions have been made for the types of hotels that are rated less on sustainability.
