Özet
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder with a rising prevalence. This increase is attributed to the aging population, pesticide exposure, and dietary habits. In addition to motor symptoms, the disease features a wide range of non-motor symptoms, often appearing years before motor symptoms begin. Correlation between clinical data and histopathologic findings reveals that multiple systems are affected. Among them is the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The microbiota, long recognized, has regained interest due to its significant role in Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology. This fact has prompted numerous experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies. The diversity of gut microbiota, considered to play a role in disease onset, has also been reported to influence disease progression, symptom severity, and drug absorption. This chapter aims to explore the relationship between Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology and the microbiota.
