Seasonal freeze-thaw adversely affects especially engineering structures (highway, railway, pipe line, drainage channel) under different loads. This effect is being studied to reduce the participation of various waste materials in fine grained soil. In this study, the changes in strength of clayey soil reinforced with scrap tire pieces was investigated under freezing-thawing conditions. Experiments were conducted on clay samples prepared by compression under standard proctor energy. Unconfined compressive strenth values of clayey soil sample with 0.5%, 1% and 2% addition of scrap tires were determined at studied temperature (+ 21 degrees C) on days 0, 1, 7 and 28. The unconfined compressive strength values of clay sample reinforced by the addition of 0.5% scrap tires increased after 28 days. After 28 day cure on sample (+ 21 degrees C,-21 oC) and 12 cycles of freezing-thawing experiments were performed. The results showed that 32.9% of unconfined compressive strength ratio of clay sample reinforced with scrap tire pieces decreased while the mass loss was determined to be 13.7%.
