Fighting Crime and Criminals in and Around the Township of Korča (17th Century)

Abstract

The city of Gorice, today known as Korča, is one of the most important cities established by the Ottomans in Albania. Gorice, which came under Ottoman rule in 1395 or just after, was reconstructed and built into a city by Mirahur İlyas Beg, the private tutor of Sultan Bayezid II. Geographically located in the southeast of Albania, Gorice was established to create a Muslim city in the region. Until its loss in 1912, the city of Gorice grew and developed under the Ottoman administration.

In this study, the provisions in the 17th century muhimme books in the Ottoman Archives and the documents in the internal affairs fund of Ibnulemin were used. According to the information in the archive records, the issues of counterfeiting, murder and banditry that occurred in and around Korča were touched upon. It has been tried to focus on the measures taken by the state to prevent these illegal crimes, which were common during the 17th century, and the issue of fighting against criminals.
