Removal of Crude Oil Pollution in Water Using Expanded Perlite, Corncob and Fiber

Özet

It is aimed to remove crude oil in water by adsorption process by using expanded perlite, corncob and fiber as adsorbent materials in this study. The BET method was used to determine the specific surface areas of the adsorbent materials. According to ASTM F726-06 standard, the capacities of adsorbent materials on adsorption of Batman-Garzan oil in water and in salty water were assessed for short-term tests of 30 minutes and long-term testing of 180 minutes. As a result of the test revealed that each adsorbent's highest specific adsorption capacity was found to be 5.0 g/L adsorbent amount. The short-term test revealed that expanded perlite, corncob, and fiber each had an adsorbing capacity of 45.78, 51.95, and 82.52 mg of adsorbed oil/g adsorbent, respectively. In the long-term test results, the adsorption capacities of the adsorbents for expanded perlite, corncob and fiber were found to be 130.63, 173.01 and 134.16 mg of adsorbed oil/g adsorbent, respectively. Crude oil removal percentages of the short-term test were determined as 21.16 for expanded perlite, 21.79 for corncob and 24.18 for fiber. It was found that the crude oil removal percentage was 63.06 for expanded perlite, 38.22 for corncob and 43.71 for fiber the long-term test results. Crude oil removal percentages of long-term tests in salty water were calculated at 30.28 for expanded perlite, 34.78 for corncob and 17.42 oil for fiber. In short and long-term test studies investigating the specific crude oil adsorption capacity; the highest adsorption capacity was observed in fiber with 18 mg/g adsorbent in the shortterm test, while it was observed in expanded perlite with 2588 mg/g adsorbent in the long-term test.
