Tramadol are useful for the treatment of postoperative pain. After anesthesia, it is not well known how it affected renal function and histology. We studied the renal effects of tramadol in an animal model using rabbits undergoing isoflurane anesthesia. Treatment groups-control (C), and tramadol (10 mg/kg/day) (T) - each comprised 10 animals. Renal function was assessed before anesthesia and after 3 treatment days by measuring serum and urine electrolytes, osmolality, urea and creatinine. Renal function did not show distinction between 0 and 3rd days in both groups. Kidney sections showed minimal pathologic changes which are not significant in both groups. In our histological and renal function studies, tramadol did not produce renal functional or histological changes.
