CHARİTABLE WOMEN İN OTTOMAN SOCİETY: FOUNDATİONS ESTABLİSHED BY WOMEN İN THE CİTY OF MANASTIR (1650- 1700)
Abstract: Waqf is an Arabic word and in the dictionary it means "to stop, to detain, to imprison". Waqf, which is a legal contract, is the permanent allocation of one or more of his movable or immovable properties to a religious, charitable or social purpose in order to be close to Allah. The main purpose of the foundation is to gain the consent of Allah. During the time of the Ottomans, who had built a foundation culture, the idea of establishing and maintaining a foundation found its broadest meaning. The foundations, which were active in many fields from the emergence of many economic, charitable and social structures to religious-scientific services, were also providing great assistance to the state by the performance of some public services. In this paper, in the second half of the 17th century, the foundations established by the women of Manastır in order to turn their wealth into good and at the same time to provide a permanent income to the people they wish are discussed. The movable and immovable assets donated by charitable women as foundations and the conditions for their disposal and management are examined. For the foundation records of the examined period, the sharia records belonging to the Manastir court and the foundation records of the Foundations Archive were used.
