Özet

‘Abd al-Majīd al-Rūmī (d. 1143/1730) was one of the sheikhs of the Khalwatī-Shamsī-Siwāsī branch. While the sources offer only limited information about his life, it appears that he spent ten of his fifteen years as sheik at the Yavashca Mehmet Agha Lodge, also known as the Nazmī Lodge after his father. Al-Rūmī’s treatise, entitled Sharh-i Duʿāʾ-i Salawāt, has survived to the present day. This treatise of Abd al-Majīd al-Rūmī, who was active in Istanbul during the late eleventh/seventeenth and early twelfth/eighteenth centuries and held various positions within Khalwatī-Siwāsī circles, contains information on the types of salawāt practiced in Khalvetī lodges, their prescribed numbers of recitation, methods of performance, and the virtues and benefits attributed to them. However, no scholarly study on Abd al-Majīd al-Rūmī and this treatise has been identified in the existing literature. This article aims, first, to compile the limited information currently available about the author and, subsequently, to examine Sharh-i Duʿāʾ-i Salawāt through content analysis and to present it for the benefit of the scholarly community. This treatise, which may be regarded as an example of a faḍhīlat-nāma, appears to bear the character of a refutation, particularly in response to Qadızādeli criticisms directed at salawāt practices, as it sets forth the Sufi approach and their understanding of the virtues of salawāt.
