In this study, it was investigated the effect of storage form
(grain-spike), grain moisture content (12, 14, 16%), storage temperature
(10, 20, 30 ˚C), storage period (3, 6
month) on the number of granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius (L.) and
rate of infestations in stored cereals. Bezostaya and Krik bread wheat
varieties were used in the storage study as grain and spike. At the beginning
of storage, five granary weevils were placed into per glass jar and reared
on wheat under controlled environmental conditions. During storage, insect
development and damaged grain were higher in storage media of Krik variety than
that of Bezostaya variety. After storage period, the
number of granary weevil and damaged grain were determined. The increase in the
grain moisture content, storage temperature and time resulted in increase in
the number of granary weevil and damaged grain. The amount of damaged grain and
granary weevil of wheat stored in spike form was lower than wheat stored in
grain form. For this reason, wheat stored in spike form was more tolerant than
wheat stored in grain form to insect damage.
