Abstract

This study analyses the demographic structure of Karayazı district, which is affiliated with Erzurum province, in terms of population growth and decline, birth and death rates, migration movements, age and gender distribution, education level, and socio-economic characteristics. Karayazı's geographical location, harsh climate conditions, high altitude, and limitations in economic activities significantly influence the district's demographic structure. The study utilises data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS), and the Ministry of Industry and Technology. The rapid population growth in the district until 1990 has declined significantly since 2000 due to intense migration, and the population loss has continued to the present day. In particular, the departure of the young and working-age population from the district has led to an increase in the proportion of elderly and dependent populations. While the fertility rate has been declining every year, the average life expectancy has been increasing, indicating that the district's population is ageing. Although education indicators show an improvement in literacy rates compared to previous years, the rate of illiteracy among the female population remains high today. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Technology, Karayazı is among the most socio-economically underdeveloped districts in Turkey. A large portion of the population lives in rural areas and earns a living through animal husbandry. This research aims to contribute to the development of local policies by evaluating demographic changes in the district of Karayazı. The findings obtained are an important resource for the development of strategies for the socio-economic development of the district, the creation of policies to prevent migration, and the planning of social services in a needs-oriented manner.
