t: It is known that the place of fabric, which is the basic material of
clothing and interior decoration, in Turkish art is quite old. In particular, the
Ottoman sultans' fondness for magnificent fabrics, especially in the sample
fabrics belonging to the Central Asian, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, and the
evaluation of the textile field as a status symbol in the past, as it is today, can
be considered among the reasons for the advanced development of the
Ottoman Empire in the art of fabric.
Especially after the 15th century, the fabric weavers, who made advanced
development in the field of textile, produced the best examples of Ottoman
palace fabrics. In addition to the technical success and richness of motifs
between the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Ottoman Empire was known
to be the strongest, the color harmony in the patterns reveals the artistic side
of the palace fabrics in the most beautiful and simple way.
Cloth weaving, which is accepted as a palace art and contributed greatly to the
income of the state treasury, played a very important role in the political,
economic, social and commercial aspects of the Ottoman Empire, and its
development was provided by state control. Despite the great change called
the Industrial Revolution, which took place in the last quarter of the 18th
century after the development of the art in the Ottoman Empire, the most
important reason why the traditional production style continued at the end of
the mentioned century and at the beginning of the 19th century is the fact that
technological conditions and mechanization have not yet reached very
advanced levels.
