7th EADMFR Junior Meeting, Amsterdam, Hollanda, 2 - 05 Şubat 2020, ss.1-2
Introduction: Scoliosis is a discomfort caused by rotation of the vertebrae. Bruxism is a hyperactivity that can adversely affect life where stress is a risk factor and patients may have masticatory muscle complaints due to this disorder. These patients are generally more stressful than normal people due to their deteriorating external appearances, but their lower quality of life due to bruxism may make them more difficult. Aim: To investigate the frequency of masticatory muscle diseases and bruxism in scoliosis patients. In this way, patients with scoliosis should be referred to the necessary bruxism and masticatory muscle diseases treatment. Material and Methods: 52 patients diagnosed with scoliosis (40 females, 12 males, mean age 16.15 ± 4.7) were referred to the faculty of dentistry. The patients were clinically examined for masticatory muscle examination to see if there was any muscle complaint or any symptoms. Patients were diagnosed with bruxism with definite statements from patients themselves or their families. Results: Twenty-two (42.3 % of the total patients) of 52 scoliosis patients had any type of bruxism. In 10 patients, any masticatory muscle disorder or complaint was found. It was found that 5 (22, 7 % of the bruxism patients) of these patients had bruxism. This value was found to be higher than the rates obtained from the studies conducted with the control groups. Conclusions: We think that the high rate of Bruxism in scoliosis patients may be due to the stresses they encounter in daily life due to the deformation on their appearance more than normal people and therefore may be more susceptible to masticatory muscle disorders. Therefore, patients with scoliosis are should be examined carefully for bruxism and masticatory muscle problems.
