The technique of friction monitored scratch testing has been used to make repeated measurements of critical load for several surface coatings. It is shown that the critical loads measured with any chosen diamond invariably decreases from one test to the next and, in some cases, can fall by 50% in the course of 10 tests. The reason for this is that the damage to the diamond tip becomes progressively more severe and the condition of the diamond is the main factor determining the measured critical load. If comparisons of measurements made with different diamonds are to have any value, some method must be found of compensating for the effects of diamond condition. Methods of doing this are suggested.
