Abstract

Traditional handwoven textiles constitute a significant component of cultural heritage by reflecting the

historical, social, and aesthetic values of the societies in which they are produced. In Turkey, traditional

handweaving practices vary considerably across regions, shaped by local raw materials, weaving

techniques, loom structures, and motif traditions. This diversity positions traditional handwoven textiles

not only as functional objects but also as carriers of regional cultural identity. This study aims to examine

the regional, technical, and design characteristics of traditional handwoven textiles produced in Turkey

through selected case examples. The research focuses on handwoven textiles produced with wool and

cotton warp and weft yarns. A descriptive research model was adopted, and the study was conducted

using the case study method as part of a literature-based survey approach. Traditional handwoven

textiles were analyzed in terms of raw materials, loom types, weaving techniques, pattern and motif

structures, and intended usage, with each example evaluated within its regional context. The findings

reveal that traditional handwoven textiles in Turkey possess distinctive technical and design features

directly associated with regional production practices and cultural traditions. The study contributes to

the documentation of traditional handweaving as cultural heritage and provides a systematic reference

framework for future studies in textile design, fashion design, and artistic applications.
