In this study, we compared iodine and magnesium concentrations in amniotic fluid of women with severe preeclampsia and of healthy pregnant women in Erzurum, Turkey. Amniotic fluid specimens were obtained from 22 women with severe preeclampsia and 20 healthy pregnant women. Iodine levels in samples were determined by the Foss method based on the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. The amniotic fluid iodine level for women with severe preeclampsia was 8.95 +/- 6.15 mg/dL, lower than 14.99 +/- 5.62 mg/dL of amniotic fluid iodine for healthy pregnant women (p < 0.001). However, the amniotic fluid magnesium concentration of 2.55 +/- 1.26 mg/dL for women with severe preeclampsia was no showed significant difference the value of 2.31 +/- 0.37 mg/dL for healthy pregnant women (p > 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the iodine levels and magnesium concentrations in amniotic fluid for healthy pregnant women (r = 0.69, p < 0.01). However, no significant correlation between the iodine levels and magnesium concentrations in amniotic fluid for women with severe preeclampsia (p > 0.05) were observed there was also no difference in thyroid hormone levels (FT4, TSH, FT3) between women with severe preeclampsia and healthy pregnant women. The iodine deficiency in our region, North-East Anatolia, may be one of the factors increasing the preeclampsia. Iodine supplementation may also be considered for preeclamptic therapy.
