Sustainable industrial performance, renewable energy transition, and carbon emissions: the role of institutional capacity in advancing sustainable development

Özet

Advancing sustainable development requires aligning industrial transformation with clean energy transition and effective governance. This study investigates the relationship between sustainable industrial performance and carbon emissions in Nordic economies, focusing on how renewable energy transition and institutional capacity shape environmental outcomes. By integrating sustainable development and ecological sustainability within a Green Kaldorian framework, the study examines whether industrial improvement is associated with climate change mitigation under different institutional conditions. Using a novel quantile approach for the period 2000–2024, the analysis captures heterogeneous relationships across the distribution of carbon emissions. The findings reveal that improvements in sustainable industrial performance are significantly associated with lower emissions across all quantiles, although the magnitude of this mitigating effect weakens at higher emission levels. Renewable energy use is consistently associated with lower emissions and reinforces the environmental benefits of industrial improvement. Institutional capacity plays a critical facilitating role by strengthening the effectiveness of sustainable industrial transformation, particularly in relatively higher-emission contexts. The results suggest that progress toward sustainable development depends not only on structural changes within industry but also on coordinated energy transition and robust governance systems. These findings provide policy-relevant insights for integrating industrial competitiveness, clean energy strategies, and long-term ecological sustainability.
